NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Children who land at the county Department of Social Services office in North Charleston while waiting for a foster home now have six calmer, home-style rooms to spend those hours in, after the foster-support nonprofit Lily Pad unveiled the spaces Friday.

It is the group’s largest project so far. There are separate rooms for babies, toddlers, school-age kids and teens, plus a room for meals and celebrations and one styled in the group’s own Lily Pad look. Weighted blankets, sensory toys, LEGO walls and dim, soft lights fill them, and parents can also use them for family visits.

Jennifer Tice, who leads Lily Pad, said she and her family fostered more than 40 children over close to 14 years before starting the group. The rooms went in weeks ago and have already been in use.

County maintenance staff painted, added outlets and laid new vinyl plank floors before installers arrived. Sherwin-Williams gave 20 gallons of paint, and Modern Woodmen of America and Jackson Marketing helped pay for the work.

Across South Carolina and Michigan, Lily Pad now counts over 90 finished rooms spread among 49 offices run by police and child welfare agencies, and it wants one in every DSS county office in the state by the end of 2027.
