MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Drivers heading from Mount Pleasant into Charleston sat in a long backup Thursday afternoon after a wreck involving several vehicles closed part of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department alerted the public to the crash at 12:39 p.m. on Oct. 29. Two of the southbound lanes, the pair on the left side, were blocked while crews worked the scene.

State Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed cars stacked up on the span around 1 p.m. as traffic toward the peninsula squeezed into the remaining lanes.

Police said no one was hurt. The department reported the bridge clear at 1:48 p.m., a little more than an hour after the first alert, and all lanes were open again. The closure hit only the southbound side, the direction that carries drivers toward Charleston. Southbound drivers on the span were in the heaviest part of the afternoon backup.
