# Vape Shop Signs Near Moultrie Middle Held in Mount Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — A proposed vape and kratom store on Coleman Boulevard will have to rework its outdoor signs before Mount Pleasant signs off, after the town Design Review Board declined to approve the plans Wednesday.

The shop sits about two-tenths of a mile from Moultrie Middle School, and a church and another school are also nearby. Its request called for five neon LED signs listing cigars, kratom, CBD, vape and hookah products.

The board directed the applicant to bring the signs in line with town rules on colors and to match the look of the surrounding neighborhood.

Parents, school leaders and recovery groups filled the meeting to object. Charleston County School District Superintendent Anita Huggins told the board its sign decision mattered, and she later welcomed the outcome. The district has used money from its lawsuit against e-cigarette maker Juul to put vape detectors in its schools.

One council member, a parent of two Moultrie students, also spoke against the location.

The larger question of whether the store belongs there goes next to the full Town Council, which set a special session for 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2.
