CHARLESTON, S.C. — For the second year in a row, Charleston County School District trustees have given Superintendent Anita Huggins their top mark, an exemplary rating on her yearly job review.

Trustees approved the evaluation at a special called meeting on Oct. 19. Her total came to 31.5 of a possible 33 points, a step up from the 30.89 she earned a year earlier. Eight of the nine board members filled out the review.

Board members singled out classroom instruction, literacy and math results, graduation, college and career readiness, teacher retention and money management as her strongest areas.

The district points to its numbers. Since 2021, proficiency on the state SC READY tests has climbed 18.6 points in English language arts and 12.9 points in math, and the graduation rate reached nearly 92% with the Class of 2026. On the newest state report cards, 43 schools were rated Excellent, compared with 34 the year before.

Board Chair Pamela McKinney said trustees still want more work on student behavior, chronic absenteeism and reading growth. Huggins credited teachers, principals and staff, and said universal pre-K and wider access to opportunities beyond the peninsula remain priorities.
