CHARLESTON, S.C. — Drivers heading onto the Charleston peninsula Monday morning should expect water on low-lying roads, city officials warned, as a king tide is forecast to peak near 8 feet at about 8 a.m.

A tide of that height could bring major flooding to the parts of the peninsula that routinely take on water, the City of Charleston said. Officials suggested leaving early, working from home where possible, or waiting until the water drains away later in the morning.

The city also asked residents to get cars out of low-lying spots before the high tide arrives and to stay out of standing water, whether walking or on a bicycle.

Monday may not be the last rough commute of the week. The Charleston Police Department has warned that the run of king tides could produce moderate to major coastal flooding through midweek, with the morning high tides Monday through Wednesday the biggest concern.

Police said flooded intersections and low roads can become impassable during those tides and urged motorists to plan their routes ahead of time and avoid driving through water.
