CHARLESTON, S.C. — A man on foot died Thursday night after a vehicle heading south on Savannah Highway hit him as he tried to cross the road in West Ashley, the Charleston Police Department said.

The collision happened at roughly 8:30 p.m. close to 2250 Savannah Highway, a stretch near a Waffle House and a DriveTime used car lot by Ashley Town Center Drive.

Investigators from the department’s Major Accident Investigation Team took over the case. Police closed the southbound side of the highway at Ashley Town Center Drive while they worked, leaving the northbound side open, and did not say when the closed lanes would reopen.

Police have not released the name of the man who was killed or said whether the driver will face charges.

Witnesses are asked to phone the department’s traffic investigators at 843-965-4084. The county’s consolidated dispatch line, 843-743-7200, and 911 will also take tips.
