CHARLESTON, S.C. — Dozens of College of Charleston students are getting ready to staff polling places on Nov. 3 after a hands-on session with the same voting machines they will run on Election Day.

The students are enrolled in a political science course titled Democracy in Action. Charleston County election officials built the training with a grant aimed at drawing college students into running elections. Earlier in the term, county staff walked the class through voter registration, and the students then ran a registration drive on campus.

The program also gives the county a new pool of potential poll workers. Charleston County’s Board of Voter Registration and Elections says it is always recruiting people for Election Day and early voting, and workers earn at least $250 per election.

The job carries a long day. Poll workers must be on duty for all of Election Day, from 6 a.m. until about 7:30 p.m., stay neutral, and finish both an online course and an in-person session of one to two hours before every election.

Applicants must be registered South Carolina voters, though 16- and 17-year-olds can also sign up.
