BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Dog adoptions are on hold at the Charleston Animal Society campus in Berkeley County after an upper respiratory illness spread among the dogs there.

The shelter said its veterinary staff has the outbreak under control and is caring for the dogs that got sick. No date has been set for adoptions to resume at the Berkeley site, and the group plans to post updates as things change.

The pause comes at a hard time. The shelter was already short on room for dogs, and closing one campus to adoptions adds to that squeeze.

People hoping to take a dog home can still go to the society campus in Charleston, where a sponsored promotion has waived fees for dogs ages 1 and older for now.

The nonprofit, which says it has worked to protect animals since 1874, sends every adopted pet home spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. It also runs a spay-neuter clinic for pet owners in the area.
