CHARLESTON, S.C. — A tractor-trailer snagged overhead lines on Morrison Drive on Tuesday, forcing Charleston police to block the downtown corridor while utility crews responded.

Officers closed the street from Romney Street to Huger Street in both directions. The ramp that drops from U.S. 17 onto Morrison was sealed as well, and drivers were steered onto other downtown streets.

Updates later Tuesday said one northbound lane tied to that U.S. 17 ramp was open again. Southbound travel on Morrison stayed shut near 4:50 p.m. as workers kept clearing the pavement.

Charleston Police Department notices did not list injuries in the early briefings. Officials asked motorists to give the work zone a wide berth until the lines and poles are secured.

The Charleston Police Department is the city municipal force that handles traffic scenes on peninsula streets such as Morrison Drive.
