# Peninsula Promise Project Launches in Charleston

## Charleston County School District Unveils New Educational Initiative

The Charleston County School District launched the Peninsula Promise Project in August. Superintendent Anita Huggins previously committed to ensuring every student’s success upon taking her role. Cheryl Swinton serves as the program executive for the project.

The Peninsula Promise Project aims to expand rigorous academic pipelines, broaden career pathways, and enrich cultural arts within downtown neighborhood schools. As part of this initiative, Universal Pre-K is now offered at Charleston Progressive Academy.

Simmons-Pinckney Middle School has introduced state-of-the-art learning spaces at the Julian Mitchell campus. Additionally, the Charleston County School District Family Education Center, a dedicated family hub, is housed in the Rhett building on Burke High School’s campus.

Educational opportunities for students include the College of Charleston’s Scholars Academy, which allows Burke’s students to take advanced placement coursework early, leading to dual-enrollment classes at the College of Charleston. The American College of the Building Arts (ACBA) offers hands-on training in specialized fields and expanded career pathways at Burke, including architectural design, carpentry, masonry, and hair braiding.

Cultural arts are also a focus, with the Linard McCloud Cultural Arts Collective enabling students to master music, dance, theatre, and visual arts alongside professional artists. An after-school program, Students Mastering Academic Arts, trains students in ballet and choreography with the S.C. Ballet, as well as in piano, theater, fiber arts, and printmaking.
