# Charleston Airport Complex Fuels $13.8B in Economic Activity

Charleston International Airport and the aviation activity clustered around it pump more than $13.8 billion into the regional economy each year, according to figures compiled by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce’s Center for Business Research, one of the most detailed local breakdowns of the airport’s economic footprint to date.

The study defines the aviation complex broadly, folding in not just the Charleston County Aviation Authority and its terminal tenants but also the neighboring Air Force component of Joint Base Charleston and the adjacent Boeing South Carolina manufacturing operation. Taken together, those three anchors are credited with supporting roughly 50,000 local jobs annually across Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. More than $1 billion of that total economic activity flows specifically from jobs tied to the airport terminal and its tenant businesses, including impacts generated by visiting air travelers who spend money once they land.

A more recent statewide analysis from the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission, prepared by economist Joseph Von Nessen, situates Charleston’s airport within a broader picture of aviation-driven growth: the state’s six commercial airports collectively generate about $22.5 billion in annual economic impact and support more than 130,000 jobs, with South Carolina currently ranking first nationally in both population and GDP growth. That statewide context helps explain why local economic-development officials have leaned so heavily on the airport’s numbers when making the case for continued infrastructure investment in the Charleston region.

The economic weight carried by the aviation complex is not evenly split. Boeing’s presence alone has historically accounted for billions of dollars of the total impact figure in prior state-level breakdowns, underscoring how closely the region’s aerospace manufacturing base and its commercial air traffic are intertwined. Airport officials have pointed to that interdependence as justification for continued capital spending on terminal and runway upgrades in recent years.

For a region whose growth has increasingly strained roads, schools and housing, the airport’s economic multiplier offers local leaders a counterargument: that continued investment in aviation infrastructure pays dividends far beyond the runway fence line, even as residents grapple with the day-to-day costs of that same growth.
