The South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs is holding its annual Governor’s Summit on Veterans’ Affairs today, Friday, September 4, in Columbia. The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Pastides Alumni Center, will feature a presentation to Governor Henry McMaster on the current state of veterans’ affairs across South Carolina.

Governor McMaster and SCDVA Secretary Todd B. McCaffrey are slated to deliver opening remarks. Discussions will be led by leaders from the SCDVA’s Veteran Services, Workforce Enhancement, and Veteran Care divisions. These sessions will focus on a veteran’s journey, from their transition out of military service through retirement and into long-term care.

The summit is expected to draw attendees from various sectors, including state and local governments, major corporations, small businesses, and numerous veterans service organizations. While the primary event is in Columbia, the outcomes and discussions from this summit are relevant to Charleston’s significant military presence at Joint Base Charleston and the services provided by the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.

Charleston is home to a substantial veteran community, and the policies and initiatives discussed at the state level directly impact local resources and support systems available to them. The summit aims to address comprehensive care and support for veterans throughout their lives.
