Actress Brenda Song made her debut as a color commentator for the Los Angeles Rams during their preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday, August 22, drawing varied responses from fans and sports commentators. Song, a self-proclaimed Rams superfan, joined the broadcast booth in the third quarter alongside Rob Havenstein, Jourdan Rodrigue, and J.B. Long.

During her commentary, Song expressed excitement, notably shouting encouragement as the Saints approached the goal line. Her enthusiasm peaked when Rams safety Alex Cook intercepted Spencer Rattler for a pick-six, prompting her to exclaim, We’re going home, bye! This moment highlighted her fan emotions, which some observers noted as a challenge for first-time broadcasters.

Veteran sports journalist Jason Whitlock criticized the decision to feature a Hollywood actress in the role, sarcastically commenting, We’re not a serious country. Fans on social media also voiced strong opinions. Some expressed frustration that Song, despite her known football knowledge, bypassed individuals who have worked extensively for such broadcasting opportunities. Comments included sentiments like, So many people have worked their entire lives for that job. She gets to skip the line for what? What a joke.

Conversely, other fans viewed the preseason as an appropriate setting for unconventional broadcasting choices. One fan remarked, Nothing about preseason football is serious, suggesting a more relaxed approach to commentary during exhibition games. Song’s prior displays of football insight, including her analysis of the Rams’ defensive strategy on a podcast, were cited as reasons for her selection.

The Rams ultimately defeated the Saints 34-0 in the game. Song’s appearance was described as focusing more on casual conversation and easygoing moments rather than intense play-by-play, given the team’s comfortable lead.
