Extreme heat events, defined as a series of days significantly hotter than average for a given time and place, pose a substantial public health risk. These events are increasingly common, more severe, and longer-lasting, a trend linked to the ongoing climate crisis. Across the nation, extreme heat claims more lives annually than any other weather-related phenomenon, underscoring the critical need for effective safety protocols in communities like Charleston.

Preparation for such events begins with ensuring adequate hydration. An average adult requires approximately three-quarters of a gallon of water daily, though individual needs can fluctuate based on activity levels and personal health. It is crucial to prioritize plain water and avoid sugary beverages, caffeinated drinks, and alcohol, all of which can contribute to dehydration rather than alleviate it. Maintaining proper hydration is a fundamental defense against the physiological stresses imposed by high temperatures.

Emergency preparedness extends beyond daily water intake to include comprehensive supply kits. A ‘Go-Kit’ should contain at least three days of portable essentials, ready for immediate evacuation if necessary. For those sheltering in place, a ‘Stay-at-Home Kit’ should be stocked with at least two weeks of supplies. Both kits should include a minimum of one gallon of drinking water per person per day. In such cases, the guidance is unequivocal: call 911 immediately. While awaiting emergency services, efforts should be made to cool the person’s body, but nothing should be given to them to drink.
